Essence by Zo Damage presents a collection of abstract photographic portraits of Melbourne musicians created through analogue photography and screen printing, each printed onto twelve oval-shaped acetate discs measuring 600x800x2mm. The discs are suspended individually on a nylon cable, so they sway in response to spatial elements such as the movement of observers and airflow. The oval shape of the discs blurs the boundaries of where an image begins and ends, reflecting the rhythmic loops in the creative process. The transparent, reflective nature of the discs allows for a dynamic interplay between the observers, the artworks, and the spatial setting. This interplay captures the complex physical and psychological sensations associated with listening to music. Due to the artwork's unique hand-dependent production methods, movement, and clear reflective plane, the installation offers a one-of-a-kind experience, mirroring the ephemeral nature of a live music experience. The musicians involved in the project further bring diverse backgrounds, contributing to the topics and themes of the installation from the perspective of live music creative sectors. Essence showed at the Ballarat Botanical Gardens Conservatory for the Ballarat International Foto Biennale 2021. The exhibition was extended to February 2022 due to popular demand.
