Connections
A woman recently asked me what my lifelong connection with photography is. My head spun. What is my connection with photography?
After thinking for a minute, I had the answer, very little. My lifelong connection is with energy, emotion and music, particularly live music.
Although I grew up around photography, the craft itself is a tool. Life through the lens is a paradox where the ordinary and benign are juxtaposed by the complexity and nuance of the world, both concentrated and amplified through the lens. It is at this juncture that I can express myself. Even as a kid, music and engaging in artistic activities – as a creator and observer – could make me inexplicably laugh or cry or bring back memories of people, places and moments.
Nothing in this has changed. I stopped questioning the whys of it a long time ago. It just is.
