November 21, 2024
Young Henrys and Monster Children present Instrument Magazine. This, the first volume of the publication, brings together eight Australian live music photographers: Charlie Hardy, Dougal Gorman, Ian Laidlaw, Joel McDonald, Maclay Heriot, Ruby Boland, Sam Brumby and Zo Damage. The launch also features a selection of the Aussie lens master’s favourite homegrown live music moments. Copies of Instrument Magazine available for purchase on the night.
Zo Damage, 2016, Gareth Liddiard (solo set), The Tote Front Bar.
“The length to which punters tried to squash into The Tote Front Bar to see Gareth Liddiard’s solo acoustic show was over the top. In the far left corner of the room, Liddiard sat on a chair perched on a countertop performing to a packed room. People peered through the windows, leaned in through the doors, tried sneaking behind the bar and standing on the ATM to get a better view. What is interesting about this photograph is that, in terms of live music performance, it does not tick any of the conventional “required” boxes: no hands in the air, no jumping around or general gig-type shenanigans. But this is, in fact, where the magic is. Eyes front, the crowd is completely captivated by Liddiard as he jokes and converses with them throughout this intimate performance. If this photograph shares even half the might of his music and massive stage presence, I’m winning.”
