Music Victoria announce 2018 Live and Breathe membership drive including new member benefits, prizes and more!
As the state’s independent voice for contemporary music, Music Victoria is the most vocal champion of the Victorian music industry.
We catch up with Laura Imbruglia from Music Victoria to find out more.
What is Music Victoria?
Music Victoria is an independent not-for-profit organisation and the state peak body for contemporary music. We are here to represent musicians, music businesses and professionals, venues, and music lovers! For a small yearly membership fee (starting at $33 per year for individuals), you can access industry-specific discounts, plus gain access to our regular workshops and programs which help you to build a sustainable career. We also advocate on your behalf, to ensure Victorian music is celebrated, protected and promoted.
What resources are available to musicians?
Musicians should refer to our membership benefits page before you book any rehearsals, advertising, merch printing or transport. You will find that you can access some pretty great discounts and save yourself a tonne of cash (if you’re a member – which you should be… because of said benefits). We also run workshops which are free for members and teach you things like: how to pitch your music to radio, how to balance your books, maintaining mental health, build confidence – you name it!
What about people other than musicians?
Those discounts and benefits I mentioned are available to ALL our members – that includes label owners, managers, booking agents, small businesses, venues, punters and more! You can save hundreds on excess baggage when flying. We’ve also just locked in new benefits including discounted gym memberships, self care workshops, music equipment and more. In addition to this, we advocate on the behalf of venues to protect them from gentrification. The Agent of Change principle has saved music venues from certain death, and we were instrumental in getting that over the line. Agent of Change offers a sensible solution to residential buildings making noise complaints about existing venues - whoever arrived last (often it’s the high rise apartment block) is responsible for covering the soundproofing cost of the venue. Similarly, if a live music venue seeks to expand, the owner/operator will be responsible for attenuating any noise effects that are caused by that change.
We also help facilitate Soundproofing Grants through the Good Music Neighbours program, and business coaching through the Live Music Professionals program, both of which are Victorian Government Initiatives.
How is MV funded?
Music Victoria is a non-profit organisation which relies on limited resources and income from various sources.
Music Victoria receives operational funding from the State Government of Victoria (Creative Victoria), the Australian Government (Australia Council for the Arts), APRA AMCOS, membership fees and other smaller sources. Music Victoria has achieved much over the last 12 months and continues to open doors for, skill and represent the music community.
How about special events?
Our three main pillars are Support, Advocate and Celebrate (Victorian music).
Our main celebration of the year is the annual The Age Music Victoria Awards, which celebrated its twelfth year in 2017. Co-presented by Triple R 102.7FM and PBS 106.7FM, The Age Music Victoria Awards 2017 acknowledges the State’s best bands, releases, venues, and festivals with a variety of awards and concludes with a massive After Party, featuring live performances of the state’s best songs of the year.
Last year was our biggest awards voting pull yet, with 72,000 public votes polled – the event shines a huge spotlight on Victorian music.

A Music Victoria membership is for everyone. It not only offers a huge range of discounts and professional development opportunities but it also ensures that Music Victoria can continue to advocate on behalf of our state's world-renowned music scene. New and existing members who renew between 19 and 29 March 2018 will go into the running for a swag of amazing prizes, and are rewarded with new member discounts across the state.
